Considering the active role undertaken by the magistracy in Romania in terms of judicial reform, a role which the Commission recognizes in the last country report released under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism in July this year, also observing the need to establish a constructive cooperation between the representatives of the political and the judiciary in support of the reform,

Given the fact that, despite efforts made by judges and prosecutors to speed up the real reform of the judiciary and to improve the quality of justice, the statute of the magistrates further deteriorates due to the increasing number of files, a result of the laws passed by the Romanian authorities, and to the compromising of the magistrates’ public image,

At the same time, taking into account that, as of yesterday, the European Commission experts have begun the task of evaluating the progress made by Romania in the justice reform, within the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, and that the findings of this mission will be included in the interim report to be issued next year,

The Romanian Magistrates Association and the Romanian Prosecutors Association respectfully requests the Commission to grant a meeting with the mission experts so that the combined effort of the representatives of the judiciary and the political class in the reform can result into a sustainable reform, in accordance with the international commitments undertaken by the Romanian authorities.
